     Contrary to what you might hear, User groups and computer bulletin boards are not high risk areas. Usually the operators of these services are quite knowledgeable and take great care to not spread viruses. They are also your best source for up to date anti-viral programs and information.

     Shareware and Public Domain programs are no higher risk than other software obtained from other users. Commercial programs are only lower risk because they are checked by the manufacturer before shipping. It is a sad fact that some companies have stopped using shareware because of the viral scare.
